Nobody plans to replace a hot water system. It fails on a Sunday night in July, and by Monday morning you're choosing between a repair, a like-for-like tank, or a heat pump with a rebate attached, usually with three people asking when the showers are back.
We repair what's worth repairing, replace what isn't, and explain the difference before you spend a dollar.
We repair and replace electric, gas storage, heat pump and continuous flow hot water systems across South West Sydney and the Macarthur region, with same-day replacement where stock allows. Sydney 2026 price guides put installed replacements at roughly $920 to $2,875 for electric storage, $1,375 to $4,025 for gas storage and $3,450 to $6,900 for a heat pump before rebates. We quote on inspection.
No hot water? What we check first
For an electric tank, check the circuit breaker and remember off-peak systems only heat overnight. A big family can simply run a tank dry. For gas storage, check the pilot light and that other gas appliances work. Continuous flow units show an error code on the controller.
A pressure relief valve that drips a little while heating is normal; one that streams, or a tank leaking from the bottom, isn't. If you have no hot water right now, our guide goes through every check before you ring.
Repair or replace?
Elements, thermostats, valves, thermocouples and tempering valves are all worth repairing on a tank under about eight years old. A tank leaking from the cylinder itself is finished: there's no repair for a rusted-through cylinder, and every day it runs it's wetting your slab.
At ten to twelve years, spending $400 on a repair for a unit that's near the end of its life is usually money you'll pay twice. We'll tell you which side of that line you're on.
Which system suits your house
| System | Installed (Sydney 2026 guides) | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric storage | $920 to $2,875 | Like-for-like swaps, off-peak tariffs, tight budgets | Highest running cost on a standard tariff |
| Gas storage | $1,375 to $4,025 | Homes already on gas with high demand | Rebates favour moving away from gas |
| Heat pump | $3,450 to $6,900 before rebates | Families on electric storage, solar owners | Fan noise: site it away from bedrooms |
| Continuous flow (gas) | Quoted per install | Small footprint, endless hot water | Needs adequate gas supply and flow rate |
NSW hot water rebates
Replacing an electric or gas storage system with an eligible heat pump attracts two stacked incentives as at mid-2026: federal small-scale technology certificates worth roughly $490-$680, and the NSW Energy Savings Scheme's hot water upgrade incentive of up to about $640 for replacing an electric unit (about $330 for gas). Combined that's around $900-$1,350 off, with a minimum customer contribution of $220 and installation through an accredited provider. Details change: check energy.nsw.gov.au and we'll confirm what applies to your job when we quote.
What a replacement includes
Disconnection and removal of the old unit, the new system on a compliant base, new valves, a tempering valve so bathroom outlets don't exceed 50 °C, pressure and leak testing, and the compliance certificate for the work. Same-day is usually possible for common electric and gas tank sizes; heat pumps sometimes need a day for supply.
Hot water system leaking
A drip from the pressure relief valve while the tank heats is normal. A steady stream from the valve, water from the top fittings, or a wet ring at the base of the tank are not, and the base one means the cylinder has rusted through and the unit is finished. Switch off the power or gas and the cold water isolation valve, then ring. Which leaks are which: hot water system leaking.
Hot water system installation cost in Sydney: what decides the price
The system type, the size the household needs, whether the new unit goes where the old one was, the state of the existing valves and pipework, and whether a heat pump rebate applies all move the number. We quote every job on inspection rather than over the phone, so the price you get is the price you pay. What pushes a Sydney install up or down: hot water system installation cost.

Electric hot water repairs Campbelltown and Macarthur
Most electric tank faults are a failed element, thermostat or relief valve, and we carry the common parts so the repair is done in one visit. If the tank is more than ten years old or leaking from the cylinder we will say so before you spend anything. What is worth fixing and what is not: hot water system repairs.
Hot water: questions we get asked
How long does a hot water system last?
Storage tanks typically last 8 to 15 years depending on water quality and whether the sacrificial anode was ever replaced. Continuous flow units often go 15 to 20 years with servicing. Heat pumps are similar to tanks, with compressors usually warranted 5 to 10 years.
Can you replace my hot water system today?
Usually, for standard electric and gas storage sizes. We carry common units or collect them from local suppliers the same morning. Heat pumps and larger tanks may need a day. Ring early and we'll tell you straight.
Is a heat pump worth it for a family in the Macarthur area?
For a household on electric storage, usually yes: running costs drop substantially and rebates cut the price gap. Choose a reputable brand, site it away from bedrooms because of fan noise, and make sure it's sized for the household.
Why is my hot water lukewarm but not cold?
On an electric tank it's often one failed element or thermostat; on any system it can be a tempering valve at end of life or a tank that's simply undersized for the household. All are cheaper to fix than a replacement.
Do I need a licensed plumber to install a hot water system in NSW?
Yes. Hot water installation is licensed plumbing work in NSW and requires a compliance certificate. Gas units also need a licensed gasfitter. Unlicensed installs can void warranty and insurance.
