A blocked toilet is either a two-minute plunger job or the first sign the sewer line below the house is going. The difference is easy to spot: if the toilet is the only thing misbehaving, the block is in the pan or the branch behind it; if the shower and sinks are slow too, or water is coming up at the gully outside, the problem is further down and plunging will not touch it.

We clear both, properly, across South West Sydney. No call-out fee, the price before we start, and 24/7 at the same rate if it is the only toilet in the house.

Short answer

Monarch Civil & Plumbing clears blocked toilets across Liverpool, Fairfield, Camden, Campbelltown and everything within about 20 km of Austral. A closet auger or a lifted pan clears a local block; if the main line is involved the jetter and camera come in. Sydney 2026 price guides put toilet repairs at $92 to $400 and a standard blocked drain clear at $180 to $450; we quote on inspection and there is no call-out fee.

What to try before you ring

A proper plunger, the kind with a flange that seals in the pan outlet, worked in slow firm strokes with enough water in the bowl to cover the cup. Most paper blockages give way in a minute. A bucket of hot (not boiling, which can crack the porcelain) water with a squirt of dishwashing liquid, left for twenty minutes, softens a paper plug. That is the list. Do not pour caustic drain cleaner into a blocked toilet: it sits in the pan, it burns, and it makes the job dangerous for whoever clears it. Our guide to unblocking a toilet walks through the steps with photos.

Stop and ring if the water keeps rising, if a second flush would put it on the floor, if other drains in the house are slow at the same time, or if there is a smell or a wet patch in the yard. Those are the sewer, not the toilet.

What we do when the plunger has failed

A closet auger clears what a plunger cannot: a wad of wipes, a toy, a toilet freshener cage or a dropped bottle wedged in the trap. If the auger finds nothing we lift the pan, which takes a few minutes and a new seal, and clear the branch behind it. If the camera is needed, it goes down from the gully to see whether the branch has sagged, the pipe has cracked or roots have found the joint, and you get the footage. A toilet that blocks every few weeks is nearly always one of those three, and clearing it again without finding out why is just renting a plumber.

While we are there we check the cistern. A lot of blocked toilets in older houses are a modern low-flush cistern on an original pan and branch that were designed for a nine-litre flush; it works, barely, until a bit more paper than usual goes down. Sometimes the honest fix is a new suite, and we will say so with a price rather than keep coming back. See toilets, taps and fixtures for repairs and replacements.

Blocked toilet in a rental

A blocked or broken toilet is on the NSW list of urgent repairs, which means a tenant should not be left without a working toilet overnight. Property managers across the Liverpool area ring us for exactly this: same-day response, 24/7 if it is the only toilet, and an itemised invoice with photos so the owner can approve the job without a visit. The photos also settle who pays: wear, roots and a failed pipe are the landlord; wipes, nappies and toys are usually the tenant.

Blocked toilet cost

Quoted on inspection, with the price confirmed before we start. A local block cleared with the auger is the bottom of the range; lifting the pan or jetting the main line is more. For reference, Sydney 2026 price guides put toilet repairs at $92 to $400 and a standard blocked drain clear at $180 to $450. There is no call-out fee, the rate is the same day or night, and seniors and pensioners get 10% off labour. If the block turns out to be the main sewer line, our blocked sewer drain page explains what happens next.

Blocked Toilets: questions we get asked

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

Usually one of three things: too much paper for a low-flush cistern on an old pan, something wedged in the trap that lets water past but catches paper, or a problem in the branch or sewer behind it such as a sag, a crack or roots. The first two are fixed on the spot; the third needs the camera, and we tell you which it is before anything is quoted.

Can I use a chemical drain cleaner on a blocked toilet?

No. Caustic cleaners do not shift a paper or wipes plug, they sit in the pan and burn whoever works on it next, and they damage old pipes and seals. A proper plunger and hot water are the only safe home remedies.

Do you charge a call-out fee for a blocked toilet?

No. There is no call-out fee anywhere in our area, the price is confirmed before any work starts, and the rate is the same after hours and on weekends. You only pay if you go ahead.

Is a blocked toilet an emergency?

If it is the only toilet in the house, if water is on the floor, or if sewage is coming up anywhere else, yes, and we come out 24/7 at the same rate. If there is a second toilet and nothing is overflowing, it can wait until morning and Paul will say so on the phone.

Are wipes really the problem?

Yes. Even wipes sold as flushable do not break down in a sewer the way paper does; they knot together and catch everything behind them. Half the toilets and sewers we clear in Liverpool and Fairfield have wipes in them. Bin them.

Will you have to replace the toilet?

Rarely. Most blocked toilets are cleared with the auger or by lifting and refitting the same pan. We only recommend a new suite when the pan is cracked, the outlet is the wrong type for the branch, or an old pan keeps blocking on a low-flush cistern, and you get a price for both options.
