What we see in Wollongong
Wollongong is three kinds of housing. The northern suburbs from Thirroul and Bulli down to Corrimal and Fairy Meadow are old miners' cottages and 1920s to 1950s weatherboard and brick, which means earthenware sewers with roots in the joints and galvanised water pipes at the end of their life. Figtree, Unanderra and Dapto are mostly 1960s to 1980s brick, where hot water systems, flexi hoses and mixer cartridges wear out in batches. And West Dapto, Shell Cove and Calderwood are new estates with the same first-generation defects we see in Leppington and Oran Park.
Two things are different here. The salt air along the coast eats outdoor taps, hot water system casings and the fittings on the sunny side of the house years earlier than in Sydney's west. And the escarpment makes Wollongong one of the wettest cities in the country, so stormwater that was adequate on paper floods the yard in a real east-coast low. Can you do an emergency in Wollongong at night?

Is a blocked sewer my problem or Sydney Water's?
If your home is on the Sydney Water sewer, you own the pipes on your property up to and including the point where they connect to Sydney Water's system, and Sydney Water owns the main and the junction. Blockages in your private pipes, including tree roots, are the owner's to clear with a licensed plumber. Paul worked for Sydney Water before starting Monarch, and a camera inspection shows which side of the line the problem is on.
